Postpartum Diaries
Working with Allison, my mission is simple: to support families with practical tools, nurturing guidance, and a whole lot of heart. Whether you're in the early days of snuggling your newborn or prepping for baby's arrival, you're in the right place. So settle into your coziest spot (yes, go ahead and reheat that coffee again!), and let’s walk through some newborn essentials—together.
🧷 The Diapering Dance: Getting Started
Let’s talk diapers. Changing your baby for the first time might feel like a mini wrestling match—most families I support are amazed at how squirmy a 7-pound baby can be!
Here’s how to set yourself up for diapering success:
Create Your Station: Have diapers, wipes, cream, and a spare outfit within reach. Organization saves stress!
Safety First: Always keep one hand on baby. That "newborn stillness" everyone talks about? It usually fades by week two.
Expect the Unexpected: Babies are known for surprise pees mid-change. Stay calm, keep extra clothes nearby, and know you're not alone.
The peepee teepee has been a game changer for some families. (You can also just use a wipe to cover up.)
👜 Hospital Bag Checklist: Keep It Simple
Packing for the hospital doesn’t have to feel like prepping for a weekend getaway. Stick to the basics—you’ll thank yourself later.
Here’s my go-to list for expectant parents:
Comfy, nursing-friendly clothes
Travel-sized toiletries (don’t forget lip balm and face wipes!)
Snacks (trust me, you’ll get hungry at 2 a.m.)
Swaddle and a going-home outfit for baby
Phone charger—you’ll take more photos than you think!
I provide all new parents with a complimentary hospital and nursery check-off list!!
👶 Nanny vs. Daycare: What’s the Right Fit?
Choosing childcare is a big decision, and there's no one-size-fits-all answer. The best choice depends on your family’s rhythms, comfort levels, and budget.
Nannies offer in-home, one-on-one care and flexibility around naps, feeding, and outings.
Daycares provide routine, structure, and socialization with other children.
Nanny shares are a hybrid option—more affordable than solo care but still personalized with multiple families.
During consultations, I often help parents compare, if asked, the pros and cons based on their unique lifestyle and values.
👩🍼 Nanny or Babysitter? Know the Difference
Families often ask me: What’s the real difference between a nanny and a babysitter? Here’s a simple breakdown:
Nannies typically work part- or full-time, handle daily routines, offer an educational background, and often have specialized experience with infants and toddlers.
Babysitters are more occasional helpers—perfect for date nights or quick errands—but may not have the same level of newborn care training.
Mother’s Helpers are often newer to childcare and work alongside the parent, offering an extra set of hands while you’re still home. They’re great for light tasks, playing with older siblings, or helping you ease into a routine during the early weeks.
Understanding these roles helps you set clear expectations and avoid confusion down the road.
💬 Interviewing a Nanny? Start With These Questions
Whether you're hiring independently or through an agency, the interview is your moment to dig deep. Don’t be afraid to ask thoughtful questions that reflect your family’s priorities.
Here are a few I always recommend:
How do you handle medical concerns or allergy-related situations?
What is your approach to routines, discipline, and developmental activities?
Do you have references from other families with newborns?
Many families say they “just knew” when they met the right nanny—but asking the right questions helps ensure a strong, long-term fit.
Thanks for joining me on the journey! I’ll be sharing more tips and real-world advice here on Postpartum Diaries, so stay tuned—and remember, you’re doing an amazing job. 💛🐞🐞
